Global Blockchain Congress 2024

(Reflection Blog)

On September 24, 2024, I attended the "Global Blockchain Congress 2024" at the Bataan Peoples Center in Balanga City, Bataan. The event was organized by the DICT Information Industry Development Bureau in collaboration with the Blockchain Council of the Philippines and the Provincial Government of Bataan, as part of Philippine Blockchain Week. The congress brought together industry leaders and enthusiasts to discuss the latest trends and innovations in blockchain technology, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among participants.

I learned that blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger technology that securely records transactions across multiple computers. This means that once information is entered into the blockchain, it cannot be altered or deleted, ensuring transparency and security. Each block in the chain contains a list of transactions, and these blocks are linked together in chronological order. This technology is most commonly associated with cryptocurrencies, but it has many other applications, such as in supply chain management, healthcare, and voting systems, where it enhances trust and accountability.

Blockchain can and has been helping to curb fakes by using verifiable credentials. This technology allows for the creation of secure digital identities that can be easily verified without relying on a central authority. For instance, in industries like fashion or pharmaceuticals, companies can issue certificates of authenticity on the blockchain. Consumers can then verify the legitimacy of products by checking these credentials against the blockchain. This not only helps prevent counterfeit goods from entering the market but also builds trust between consumers and brands, ensuring that people are purchasing genuine products.

Blockchain technology also plays a significant role in the acceleration of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). By providing a secure and transparent way to manage data and transactions, blockchain can streamline processes in areas such as identity verification, payments, and service delivery. For example, it can enhance the efficiency of government services by enabling secure digital identities that citizens can use to access various public services seamlessly. Additionally, blockchain can improve the integrity of data in DPI systems, ensuring that information is accurate and tamper-proof. This not only speeds up service delivery but also fosters greater trust in public institutions as they embrace digital transformation.

Reflecting on the "Global Blockchain Congress 2024," there are clear practical applications for blockchain technology, especially in supply chain management and healthcare. In supply chains, blockchain can enhance transparency and traceability, helping companies track products from origin to consumer and reducing fraud, particularly in food and pharmaceuticals.

In healthcare, blockchain can securely manage patient data, allowing providers to access accurate medical records while protecting sensitive information. It also empowers patients to control their own data, fostering trust. Additionally, incorporating blockchain into educational programs can prepare students for future opportunities in this technology. Overall, these applications highlight blockchain's potential to improve transparency, security, and collaboration across various industries.

The venue was spacious and inviting, creating a warm atmosphere for learning and collaboration. The hosts were excellent speakers, engaging everyone with their knowledge and enthusiasm, which really set the tone for the event. There were plenty of giveaways and freebies, along with a delicious free lunch and snacks that made the experience even more enjoyable.

Many attendees were genuinely interested in the seminar, fostering a vibrant atmosphere for discussion and exchange of ideas. This engagement led to meaningful networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect and share insights. Overall, we are truly grateful for the opportunity provided to us; it was a valuable experience that not only expanded our knowledge but also inspired us to explore new possibilities in the field. The positive energy and camaraderie among attendees made it a memorable and enriching event!
