TechTIPS 022: Hack-Proofing Your Digital World
(Reflection Blog)
Participating in the "TechTIPS 022: Hack-Proofing Your Digital World" webinar was an insightful experience that highlighted essential cybersecurity practices. Organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Tarlac, this session was held on August 30, 2024, via Zoom. Led by Ms. Mary Joyce Manalo, a Project Development Officer, the webinar provided valuable guidance on understanding hacking techniques and implementing effective online safety measures.
The speaker began the webinar by defining cybersecurity as the practice of safeguarding computers, networks, and data from unauthorized access, cyberattacks, and other digital threats. She emphasized that cybersecurity involves using various tools, policies, security concepts, actions, training, guidelines, risk management, best practices, assurance and technologies that can be used to protect sensitive information and ensure the safe functioning of digital systems.
She explained that data is now more valuable than oil and is the most expensive asset in the world. This is because data plays a big role in business decisions and drives the global economy, making it a major target for hackers.
She defined hacking as the process of exploiting vulnerabilities in computer systems or networks to gain unauthorized access, often with the intent to steal, manipulate, or damage data.
The speaker explained that hacking works by identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in computer systems, networks, or software. Hackers use various techniques, such as phishing, malware, brute force attacks, and social engineering, to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data or disrupt system functionality. Once they find a weak point, they can bypass security measures, infiltrate systems, steal or manipulate information, or cause operational damage. Hackers may also use tools like keyloggers, viruses, or spyware to monitor and control targeted systems.
By applying the insights from the "TechTIPS 022: Hack-Proofing Your Digital World" webinar, I am now better prepared to enhance my online security and practice safe online etiquette. The webinar's focus on using strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and being cautious with emails and links has equipped me to better protect my personal information. Additionally, the emphasis on respecting privacy and maintaining a low profile online will help me foster a safer digital environment. Overall, I feel more confident in safeguarding my online presence and sharing these best practices with others.
